The city should incentivize the beautification of properties located in the historic district. One example would be to provide some kind of rebate to residents who have made dramatic landscape or facade (period appropriate) improvements to their homes, in much the same way the city has given grants to business owners to update their storefronts. People are attracted to Mount Dora for its beauty and historic homes at least as much as they are to the shopping district. Some homes in the downtown area have unkempt yards, dilapidated fences, and uninspired facades. There could be contests as well, for most improved properties, etc.

Some landscaping to soften fence line would be a great improvement. And how about spotlighting some local artists to paint the water tower itself? It's been done in other cities.

Due to Mount Dora's unique geography, it would be great to see an annual soap box derby down one of the steeper roads going through downtown.

My idea is for a universal WiFi network that covers the downtown area. The network would feature a captive portal that provides an overview map of the area along with useful links, before allowing the user to access other internet services such as email, facebook, etc. Visitors will be able to tell friends and family all about their Mt Dora vacation, while walking all around downtown and the lake area, providing immediate word-of-mouth publicity in addition to having a convenient on-line guide of the area's amenities.

Pedicabs are bicycle taxis (http://www.pedicab.com/) that are fun, convenient ways of transporting people over relatively short distances. A pedicab franchise that serves the downtown historic district would allow better access between the larger outlying parking lots for people with walking difficulties. It would also add to the friendly atmosphere and charm of downtown Mount Dora, and could even offer leisurely tours!

Donnelly Park is at the heart of our beautiful downtown, and it should be a showcase of beautiful green space. The tennis court makes little sense because it takes a lot of area for the enjoyment of two, MAYBE 4 people at a time, and it's either underutilized all together, or you have 2 people using it and everyone else has to wait. The lawn bowling already has a large club a few blocks away. Can't these facilities be moved to an area that's more accessible to others than the few who live in the commercial core? Donnelly Park tries to be too many things in too little space. A larger green space can be used for many purposes during special events. It can be used for picnics, or just sitting there, taking in the beauty.

Removing the telephone poles and burying the cable along Lakeshore Dr. would dramatically improve the aesthetic of the area. The power lines come into dangerously close contact with the large live oaks and palms on this stretch of road, and load the cabling with spanish moss. The cable company has really turned the utilities into an eye sore by continually adding drooping coaxial cable along this otherwise pristine stretch of road.

Whenever someone complains about some of the inconveniences created by our festivals, we're always told they increase our home values. Now, based on my estimated property tax notice, the city is considering raising the city tax significantly higher than all other taxes. This will make our homes harder to sell. Eustis and Tavares should love it. There are several other ways to raise revenue such as charging for boat parking; get Mount Dora Marina to manage the useless docks built for the Antique Boat Show by setting them up for on water long term docking; get the downtown landlords to setup off street merchant parking to increase visitor parking; other ideas. Let's get creative and save our home values.
