Nick Girone became Mount Dora’s Mayor in November 2015. Prior to that, he served as a Council Member-At-Large from 2012 to 2014. Nick, along with his wife Judy, relocated to The Lakes of Mount Dora from Vineland, NJ in 2010. They have two children, Deborah (deceased) and Eric. They are the proud grandparents to Matthew, Angelina, Courtney, Rocco, Zachary, Marvin, Isabella and Kevin. 2018 brought them their Great-grandchild, Jackson.
Nick has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management from the University of Cincinnati, and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Rowan University. He earned certification as a Registered Public Purchasing Official. He also earned professional distinction as a Registered School Business Administrator, Emeritus. He served for over 16 years as a School Board Member for the Vineland, NJ school district where he obtained the coveted Certificate as a Master School Board Member.
Nick is a Veteran, having served in the United States Army Air Defense Command from 1963-1966. He spent the majority of his professional career in the educational field as a Business Administrator for several New Jersey school districts. He worked for the New Jersey Department of Education as a Facilities Manager for several counties. He was a co-owner of his family’s business, The Vineland Fireworks Company for 10 years. When Nick lived in the Cincinnati area, he worked as an Industrial Engineer with the Cincinnati Milacron and the Mosler Safe Company. He officially retired in 2006 as a School Business Administrator from the Fort Lee School District in NJ.
Nick is actively involved in the Mount Dora community, supporting a number of organizations and events. He is a Past-President for the Mount Dora Sister Cities Association. He served as an Associate Director on the Mount Dora Music Festival. As Mayor, he believes very strongly in Transparency in government, Fiscal/Personal Accountability and Two-Way Communication. He posts a monthly Newsletter on the City’s Website, along with a weekly open door at the Mayor’s Office in City Hall, usually on Thursdays. Mayor Girone wants the public and business owners to stop by and discuss issues without an appointment. He continues to stress planned economic development growth for the City along with the coordinated expansion of the infrastructure to support future needs.
Nick was elected to the Board of Directors for the Florida League of Mayors, representing District 6. He also serves on the Lake-Sumter Municipal Planning Organization as the current Chairman for 2019.
