Why are fire hydrants painted different colors?

City-owned hydrants are painted yellow as they are tested by the city.

Private hydrants, which are tested and painted by the owner, are painted silver.

The bonnet colors for ALL hydrants are painted in compliance with ISO Flow Standards:
Blue: 1,500 gpm (gallons per minute) or greater
Green: 1,000 to 1,499 gpm
Orange: 500 to 999 gpm
Red: less than 500 gpm
